Chapter 74

Why Have You Rejected Us Forever?

This communal lament asks why God seems to have rejected his people while enemies devastate the sanctuary, erase holy places, and mock his name without restraint. The psalm looks directly at the ruins and at the painful absence of signs, prophets, and visible intervention, then counters that bleakness by remembering God as king from of old whose mighty acts subdued chaos, ordered creation, and set the world's bounds. On that basis the prayer returns to plea: God must remember the enemy's scorn, regard his covenant, defend the oppressed, and rise to uphold his own cause against unceasing blasphemy.

Psalm 74 is one of the Psalter's great sanctuary laments, joining historical catastrophe with creation theology. It teaches that when God's dwelling appears desecrated and his people abandoned, faith may still appeal to his ancient kingship, covenant commitments, and sovereign power over both history and the cosmos.

10How long, O God, will the enemy taunt You? 11Why do You withdraw Your strong right hand?

12Yet God is my King from ancient times, 13You divided the sea by Your strength; 14You crushed the heads of Leviathan; 15You broke open the fountain and the flood; 16The day is Yours, and also the night; 17You set all the boundaries of the earth;

18Remember how the enemy has mocked You, O LORD, 19Do not deliver the soul of Your dove to beasts; 20Consider Your covenant, 21Do not let the oppressed retreat in shame; 22Rise up, O God; defend Your cause! 23Do not disregard the clamor of Your adversaries,
