Be My Rock of Refuge

The psalm opens with a plea for refuge, rescue, and deliverance grounded in God's righteousness. The Lord is asked to be a continual rock of habitation and fortress because the speaker has leaned on him from birth and found in him hope from youth. Though he has become a sign to many, his confidence remains fixed on God, and his mouth is filled with praise and honor all day long.

I1n You, O LORD, I have taken refuge; 2In Your justice, rescue and deliver me; 3Be my rock of refuge, 4Deliver me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, 5For You are my hope, O Lord GOD, 6I have leaned on You since birth; 7I have become a portent to many, 8My mouth is filled with Your praise

The psalmist now asks not to be cast off in old age or forsaken when strength fails. His enemies interpret his weakness as proof that God has abandoned him and conspire to seize him. In response, he pleads for God not to be far off and asks that those who accuse and seek his harm be put to shame and consumed.

9Do not discard me in my old age; 10For my enemies speak against me, 11saying, “God has forsaken him; 12Be not far from me, O God. 13May the accusers of my soul

Instead of surrendering to fear, the psalmist resolves to hope continually and add praise upon praise. He will speak of God's righteousness and salvation all day, even though their fullness exceeds his knowledge. Remembering that God has taught him from youth, he asks not to be forsaken in old age so that he can proclaim God's strength and power to the next generation.

14But I will always hope 15My mouth will declare Your righteousness 16I will come in the strength of the Lord GOD; 17O God, You have taught me from my youth, 18Even when I am old and gray,

The psalmist magnifies God's righteousness as reaching to the heavens and remembers that the God who has shown him many troubles will revive him again and lift him up from the depths. Confident of restored honor and comfort, he promises praise with harp and song to the Holy One of Israel. His lips, soul, and tongue will rejoice and speak of God's righteousness all day, because those who sought his harm have been shamed and confounded.

19Your righteousness reaches to the heavens, O God, 20Though You have shown me many troubles and misfortunes, 21You will increase my honor 22So I will praise You with the harp 23When I sing praise to You 24My tongue will indeed proclaim
