Chapter 64

The Hurtful Tongue

David asks God to hear his complaint and hide him from the secret counsel of the wicked, whose words are sharpened like weapons and whose plots are laid in confident secrecy against the innocent. The psalm describes a conspiracy built on hidden malice and fearless speech, but then turns suddenly as God answers with his own arrow and makes their tongues ruin them. Their downfall becomes public testimony, so all people fear, recount God's work, and the righteous find fresh reason to rejoice and take refuge in the Lord.

Psalm 64 shows how the Psalter treats verbal violence and covert evil as real threats while insisting that hidden plots remain fully visible to God. It moves from private fear to public vindication and teaches that the Lord can overturn secret injustice in a way that exposes the wicked, instructs the world, and steadies the hearts of the righteous.
