You Have Heard My Vows

David calls from the ends of the earth with a faint heart, asking God to hear him and lead him to a rock higher than he can climb by himself. He remembers God as refuge and strong tower and therefore longs to dwell in God's tent forever and find shelter beneath the covering of his wings.

F1or the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. Of David. 2From the ends of the earth I call out to You 3For You have been my refuge, 4Let me dwell in Your tent forever

David affirms that God has heard his vows and granted him the inheritance of those who fear God's name. He then prays for the king's days to be prolonged and his throne secured before God by steadfast love and faithfulness, and he closes by promising to sing praise to God's name continually while paying his vows day after day.

5For You have heard my vows, O God; 6Increase the days of the king’s life; 7May he sit enthroned in God’s presence forever; 8Then I will ever sing praise to Your name

Section summaryFrom a place of emotional and perhaps geographical distance, David cries to God for hearing and asks to be led to a rock too high for him to reach alone. He remembers that God has already been his refuge and strong tower and therefore longs to dwell forever in God's tent and take shelter beneath his wings. On that basis he affirms that God has heard his vows and given him the inheritance of those who fear the divine name, prays for the extension and secure reign of the king before God, and ends by pledging unceasing praise as he fulfills his vows day by day.
Role in the chapterThis section functions as a movement from faint-hearted petition to renewed security and ongoing worship. It connects personal refuge, covenant inheritance, and royal preservation within one prayer of trust.
