Why Do You Boast of Evil?

David confronts the mighty man who boasts in evil even while God's steadfast love endures continually. The man's tongue is portrayed as a sharpened razor planning ruin, loving evil more than good, falsehood more than truth, and every devouring word that tears others down.

F1or the choirmaster. A Maskil of David. After Doeg the Edomite went to Saul and told him, “David has gone to the house of Ahimelech.” 2Your tongue devises destruction 3You love evil more than good, 4You love every word that devours,

In answer to such treachery, David declares that God will break the evildoer down forever, snatch him from his tent, and uproot him from the land of the living. The righteous will watch with fear and recognition, pointing to him as the man who refused God as refuge and instead trusted in his great riches and in the strength of his own destructive schemes.

5Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin; 6The righteous will see and fear; 7“Look at the man

By contrast, David sees himself as a green olive tree in the house of God, trusting forever in God's steadfast love rather than in wealth or violence. He commits himself to perpetual thanksgiving for what God has done and to patient hope in God's good name before the gathered faithful.

8But I am like an olive tree 9I will praise You forever,

Section summaryDavid addresses the arrogant evildoer whose tongue functions like a sharpened weapon, delighting in evil, lies, and devouring words rather than what is good and true. He announces that God will tear such a man down and uproot him from the land of the living, says the righteous will see and fear and mock the folly of trusting riches over God, and then contrasts that ruin with his own condition as a green olive tree trusting forever in God's steadfast love, resolved to thank him publicly and wait on his good name among the saints.
Role in the chapterThis section works as both judgment oracle and testimony. It exposes the instability of destructive boasting, then turns to the durable security of a life rooted in God's covenant love.
