Chapter 47

Clap Your Hands, All You Peoples

This psalm summons all peoples to clap, shout, and sing because the LORD Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth. It celebrates his subduing of nations, his gift of inheritance to his people, his ascension amid joyful acclamation, and his reign over the nations from his holy throne, ending with a vision of the nobles of the earth gathered with the people of the God of Abraham under the exalted rule of God.

Psalm 47 is a royal enthronement hymn with a universal horizon. It teaches that Israel's God is not a tribal deity but the sovereign king of all peoples, and it joins covenant privilege to missionary breadth by calling the nations themselves to rejoice under the God whose rule gathers and governs the whole earth.
