Chapter 46

God Is Our Refuge and Strength

This psalm declares God to be the unfailing refuge and strength of his people, so certain that even earth-shaking chaos and roaring seas need not produce fear. It celebrates the secure city where God dwells, contrasts divine stability with raging nations and collapsing kingdoms, invites the hearer to see the LORD's desolating and war-ending works, and closes with the command to be still before the God who will be exalted in all the earth.

Psalm 46 is a song of holy confidence under total instability. It teaches that the peace of God's people does not come from quiet circumstances but from God's present indwelling, sovereign voice, and final triumph over every threat, so that refuge becomes worship and stillness becomes submission to the Lord of hosts.
