Victory over Betrayal

David opens by pronouncing blessing on the one who considers the weak and needy, because the LORD delivers such a person in trouble. God protects, preserves, blesses, and sustains him even on the bed of illness, turning sickness itself into a place of divine care.

F1or the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. 2The LORD will protect and preserve him; 3The LORD will sustain him on his bed of illness

David then applies that theology to himself, asking the LORD for grace and healing because he has sinned. Meanwhile his enemies maliciously long for his death, and even visitors who come near him speak falsehood, gathering slander in their hearts before carrying it outside.

4I said, “O LORD, be gracious to me; 5My enemies say with malice: 6My visitor speaks falsehood;

Those who hate David whisper together and interpret his illness as final ruin, convinced he will never rise again. The grief deepens into betrayal when even his close friend, one who shared his bread and enjoyed his trust, turns against him.

7All who hate me whisper against me; 8“A vile disease has been poured into him; 9Even my close friend whom I trusted,

David asks the LORD to be gracious and raise him up, and he takes his deliverance as evidence that God delights in him and will not let the enemy triumph. Upheld in integrity and set before God's face forever, he closes by blessing the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting, sealing the psalm with a double Amen.
