Psalms 33:1-22·~1 min

Praise to the Creator

The psalm opens by calling the righteous to rejoice in the LORD, because praise is fitting for the upright. Harp, lyre, and a new song are summoned into service, and the people are urged to play skillfully and shout for joy before God.

R1ejoice in the LORD, O righteous ones; 2Praise the LORD with the harp; 3Sing to Him a new song;

David explains why such praise is fitting: the word of the LORD is upright, his works are faithful, and he loves righteousness and justice so that the earth is full of his steadfast love. By that same word the heavens and their hosts were made, the seas were gathered and stored, and all the earth is summoned to fear him because when he speaks, creation comes into being.

4For the word of the LORD is upright, 5The LORD loves righteousness and justice; 6By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, 7He piles up the waters of the sea; 8Let all the earth fear the LORD; 9For He spoke, and it came to be;

The LORD frustrates the plans of the nations while his own counsel stands forever, making blessed the people he has chosen as his inheritance. From heaven he sees all humanity, fashions every heart, and understands every deed, so no king, warrior, or warhorse can finally save; instead, the LORD's eyes rest on those who fear him and hope in his love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.

10The LORD frustrates the plans of the nations; 11The counsel of the LORD stands forever, 12Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, 13The LORD looks down from heaven; 14From His dwelling place He gazes 15He shapes the hearts of each; 16No king is saved by his vast army; 17A horse is a vain hope for salvation; 18Surely the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear Him, 19to deliver them from death

The psalm closes with a communal confession: the people wait for the LORD because he is their help and shield, their hearts rejoice in him because they trust his holy name, and they ask that his steadfast love rest upon them as they continue to hope in him.

20Our soul waits for the LORD; 21For our hearts rejoice in Him, 22May Your loving devotion rest on us, O LORD,

Section summaryThe psalm summons the righteous to rejoice with fresh, skillful praise, then declares that the LORD's word and works are upright and that by his word the heavens were made. From there it proclaims his sovereignty over the nations and all humanity, exposes the vanity of military might, and closes with a corporate confession of waiting, rejoicing, and hoping in the LORD's steadfast love.
Role in the chapterThis single section moves from invitation to praise, to reasons for praise in creation and providence, to a shared confession of trust. It presents the LORD as both cosmic Creator and practical refuge for his people.
