Deliver Me, O LORD!
The psalm begins by locating David in the moment of fleeing Absalom and by recording how many enemies have risen against him. Their cruel conclusion is not merely that he is endangered, but that God himself will not act for him.
A1 Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom. 2Many say of me,
In direct contrast to his enemies' words, David declares that the LORD surrounds him as a shield, restores his honor, and lifts his head. He cries aloud, and the God whose presence dwells on the holy hill answers him.
3But You, O LORD, are a shield around me, 4To the LORD I cry aloud,
Because the LORD sustains him, David can lie down, sleep, and wake again without being swallowed by fear. Even if thousands assemble against him on every side, he refuses to yield the inner ground of trust.
5I lie down and sleep; 6I will not fear the myriads
The psalm closes as prayer sharpens into petition: David asks the LORD to arise, save, and strike down his enemies. The final word lifts the whole crisis into theology, declaring that salvation belongs to the LORD and that his blessing rests on his people.
