The LORD Is My Rock

David opens with love and praise for the LORD as strength, rock, fortress, shield, and horn of salvation. When death and destruction surrounded him, he called on the LORD, and his cry rose into God's presence.

F1or the choirmaster. Of David the servant of the LORD, who sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said: 2The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. 3I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; 4The cords of death encompassed me; 5The cords of Sheol entangled me; 6In my distress I called upon the LORD;

The rescue is then described in cosmic language: the earth quakes, the LORD descends, darkness and storm surround him, and his thunder and arrows scatter the enemy. From the depths he reaches down, draws David out, and brings him into a broad place because he delights in him.

7Then the earth shook and quaked, 8Smoke rose from His nostrils, 9He parted the heavens and came down 10He mounted a cherub and flew; 11He made darkness His hiding place, 12From the brightness of His presence 13The LORD thundered from heaven; 14He shot His arrows and scattered the foes; 15The channels of the sea appeared, 16He reached down from on high and took hold of me; 17He rescued me from my powerful enemy, 18They confronted me in my day of calamity, 19He brought me out into the open;

David reflects on the LORD's righteousness, saying that God rewarded him according to integrity and deals with people according to their character, saving the humble and bringing low the proud. Because God's way is perfect and his word proven, he lights the darkness, strengthens his servant, and becomes an unshakable shield.

20The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; 21For I have kept the ways of the LORD 22For all His ordinances are before me; 23And I have been blameless before Him 24So the LORD has repaid me according to my righteousness, 25To the faithful You show Yourself faithful, 26to the pure You show Yourself pure, 27For You save an afflicted people, 28For You, O LORD, light my lamp; 29For in You I can charge an army, 30As for God, His way is perfect;

The LORD alone is God and rock, and he equips David with strength, speed, skill, protection, and a widening path underfoot. Military success is traced directly to divine training and support rather than to human power alone.

31For who is God besides the LORD? 32It is God who arms me with strength 33He makes my feet like those of a deer 34He trains my hands for battle; 35You have given me Your shield of salvation; 36You broaden the path beneath me

David pursues and defeats enemies because the LORD has girded him with strength and made his foes turn their backs. Their cries go unanswered, foreign peoples submit, and nations once unknown come trembling under the rule God has established.

37I pursued my enemies and overtook them; 38I crushed them so they could not rise; 39You have armed me with strength for battle; 40You have made my enemies retreat before me; 41They cried for help, but there was no one to save them — 42I ground them as dust in the face of the wind; 43You have delivered me from the strife of the people; 44When they hear me, they obey me; 45Foreigners lose heart

The psalm ends in blessing and exaltation of the living LORD who avenges, rescues, and raises his king above enemies. David vows public praise among the nations because the LORD gives great salvation to his king and shows steadfast love to his anointed forever.

46The LORD lives, and blessed be my Rock! 47the God who avenges me 48who delivers me from my enemies. 49Therefore I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations; 50Great salvation He brings to His king.

Section summaryDavid sings to the LORD after deliverance from Saul and all his enemies, praising God as his rock, shield, and refuge. He then recounts a rescue so immense that the earth shakes, heaven bends low, and the LORD descends to save him, before widening the song into a confession of God's righteous dealings, battle-giving strength, worldwide rule, and covenant mercy to his anointed forever.
Role in the chapterThis single section functions as both testimony and theology. It teaches Israel how to read royal deliverance: not as private luck or military genius, but as the action of the living God whose power, justice, and covenant loyalty establish the king and secure hope for the people bound to him.
