Chapter 144

Blessed Be the LORD, My Rock

David blesses the LORD as his rock, the one who trains his hands for battle and shelters him in steadfast love, while also marveling that such a God gives attention to frail human beings whose days pass like a shadow. He then asks the LORD to bow the heavens and rescue him from foreign enemies whose mouths speak falsehood, promises a new song in response to deliverance, and ends with a picture of sons, daughters, storehouses, flocks, and streets at peace, declaring blessed the people whose God is the LORD.

Psalm 144 gathers several threads already alive in the surrounding psalms: rescue from deceitful enemies, humility before God, and hope for public peace. It fits Book V by moving from personal warfare and deliverance toward communal flourishing, showing that the saving help of the LORD is not only for survival in battle but for the settled happiness of a people living under his favor.

O1f David. 2He is my steadfast love and my fortress,

3O LORD, what is man, that You regard him, 4Man is like a breath;

5Part Your heavens, O LORD, and come down; 6Flash forth Your lightning and scatter them; 7Reach down from on high; 8whose mouths speak falsehood,

9I will sing to You a new song, O God; 10to Him who gives victory to kings, 11Set me free and rescue me

12Then our sons will be like plants 13Our storehouses will be full, 14Our oxen will bear great loads. 15Blessed are the people of whom this is so;
