I Lift My Voice to the LORD

David lifts his voice aloud to the LORD, not hiding his complaint but pouring it out before him in full. Even while his spirit grows faint, he knows that God sees the path ahead and the snare laid for him there.

A1 Maskil of David, when he was in the cave. A prayer. 2I pour out my complaint before Him; 3Although my spirit grows faint within me,

When David looks to the right, the place where help should appear, no one notices him and no refuge remains. In that stripped-down moment he says to the LORD alone, You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.

4Look to my right and see; 5I cry to You, O LORD: “You are my refuge,

David asks the LORD to listen because he has been brought very low and to rescue him from pursuers stronger than he is. The prayer ends by asking to be brought out of prison into thanksgiving, with the righteous surrounding him because God has dealt bountifully with him.

6Listen to my cry, 7Free my soul from prison,

Its work is to take the speaker from exposed helplessness, through the confession that God alone remains, to a hoped-for deliverance that will not stay private but will end in thanksgiving shared among the righteous.
