His Loving Devotion Endures Forever
The psalm begins with three calls to give thanks to the LORD, the God of gods, and the Lord of lords. Before any act is named, praise is grounded in who he is and in the refrain that his loving devotion endures forever.
G1ive thanks to the LORD, for He is good. 2Give thanks to the God of gods. 3Give thanks to the Lord of lords.
The hymn first remembers the LORD's wonders in creation: he made the heavens with insight, spread out the earth upon the waters, and appointed the great lights, the sun for the day and the moon and stars for the night. The created order itself becomes evidence of enduring love.
4He alone does great wonders. 5By His insight He made the heavens. 6He spread out the earth upon the waters. 7He made the great lights — 8the sun to rule the day, 9the moon and stars to govern the night.
The psalm then turns to redemption, recalling the striking of Egypt's firstborn, Israel's deliverance by a mighty hand, the dividing of the Red Sea, Israel's passage through it, Pharaoh's overthrow, and the LORD's guidance through the wilderness. His love is shown not only in making the world but in rescuing his people through danger and judgment.
10He struck down the firstborn of Egypt 11and brought Israel out from among them 12with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. 13He divided the Red Sea in two 14and led Israel through the midst, 15but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea. 16He led His people through the wilderness.
The remembrance continues with the defeat of great and mighty kings, named in Sihon and Og, and with the gift of their land to Israel as an inheritance. The LORD's love is seen here in judgment on hostile powers and in the quiet handing over of a heritage to his servant people.
17He struck down great kings 18and slaughtered mighty kings— 19Sihon king of the Amorites 20and Og king of Bashan— 21and He gave their land as an inheritance, 22a heritage to His servant Israel.
The psalm comes from ancient acts into the speaker's own need: the LORD remembers his people in their low estate, frees them from enemies, and gives food to every creature. It closes by giving thanks once more to the God of heaven, so that national memory widens into present mercy and universal provision.
23He remembered us in our low estate 24and freed us from our enemies. 25He gives food to every creature. 26Give thanks to the God of heaven!
