Psalms 126:1-6·~1 min

Zion’s Captives Restored

The psalm begins by remembering a restoration so overwhelming that it felt unreal and filled the people with laughter while even the nations named the LORD's great work. That remembrance becomes a present prayer for renewed restoration, and the final image turns present tears into the seed of future joy as the weeping sower returns carrying a harvest.

A1 song of ascents. 2Then our mouths were filled with laughter, 3The LORD has done great things for us; 4Restore our captives, O LORD, 5Those who sow in tears 6He who goes out weeping,

Section summaryThe psalm recalls a restoration so great that it seemed dreamlike and drew even the nations into acknowledging what the LORD had done for his people. From that memory it turns into a fresh plea for restoration like overflowing desert streams, then ends with the promise that those who sow and go out in tears will return with joy and with sheaves in their hands.
Role in the chapterThis section functions as a psalm of remembered mercy and renewed request. It teaches the community to let past deliverance shape present hope, so that joy already given becomes the ground for asking again and for enduring the costly work of faith while waiting for harvest.
