Psalms 125:1-5·~1 min

The LORD Surrounds His People

The psalm begins by naming the stability of those who trust in the LORD and by picturing his care as the mountain ring around Jerusalem. It then explains why such protection matters: wicked rule will not be allowed to settle permanently on the righteous, the good are commended to God's kindness, and those who turn aside are set apart from the peace spoken over Israel.

A1 song of ascents. 2As the mountains surround Jerusalem, 3For the scepter of the wicked will not rest 4Do good, O LORD, to those who are good, 5But those who turn to crooked ways

Section summaryThe psalm says that those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, enduring and unshaken, and that the LORD surrounds his people as the mountains surround Jerusalem. From that image of security it turns into prayer and warning: the righteous should not be left under wicked rule forever, the good should receive the LORD's goodness, the crooked should be led away with evildoers, and peace should rest on Israel.
Role in the chapterThis section functions as a compact trust psalm with a moral edge. It offers assurance, but not as a vague feeling; the LORD's surrounding care supports the upright, limits wicked power, and brings a final division between straight and crooked ways.
