Psalms 119:1-176·~5 min

Your Word Is a Lamp to My Feet

The psalm opens by blessing those whose lives are shaped by the LORD's law and testimonies. From there it turns quickly into prayerful resolve: the speaker longs for steady obedience, freedom from shame, upright praise, and perseverance in keeping the LORD's statutes.

B1lessed are those whose way is blameless, 2Blessed are those who keep His testimonies 3They do no iniquity; 4You have ordained Your precepts, 5Oh, that my ways were committed 6Then I would not be ashamed 7I will praise You with an upright heart 8I will keep Your statutes;

The question of purity is answered by guarding life according to the word. The speaker seeks the LORD wholeheartedly, stores the word in his heart, speaks it with his lips, and delights in it more than wealth, making meditation the means by which purity becomes possible.

9How can a young man keep his way pure? 10With all my heart I have sought You; 11I have hidden Your word in my heart 12Blessed are You, O LORD; 13With my lips I proclaim 14I rejoice in the way of Your testimonies 15I will meditate on Your precepts 16I will delight in Your statutes;

As a servant and stranger on the earth, the speaker asks for opened eyes so he can see the wonders in the law. Even while arrogance, contempt, and slander gather around him, the LORD's testimonies remain his delight and his counselors.

17Deal bountifully with Your servant, 18Open my eyes that I may see 19I am a stranger on the earth; 20My soul is consumed with longing 21You rebuke the arrogant — 22Remove my scorn and contempt, 23Though rulers sit and slander me, 24Your testimonies are indeed my delight;

The soul lies in the dust and melts with sorrow, so the speaker asks for life, instruction, and protection from deceit. He chooses the way of truth, clings to the LORD's testimonies, and hopes for a broadened heart that can run in the way of the commandments.

25My soul cleaves to the dust; 26I recounted my ways, and You answered me; 27Make clear to me the way of Your precepts; 28My soul melts with sorrow; 29Remove me from the path of deceit 30I have chosen the way of truth; 31I cling to Your testimonies, O LORD; 32I run in the path of Your commandments,

The speaker asks to be taught, given understanding, directed, and inwardly turned toward the LORD's testimonies rather than selfish gain and worthless things. He longs for the word to be established in him, disgrace to be turned aside, and life to come through the LORD's righteousness.

33Teach me, O LORD, the way of Your statutes, 34Give me understanding that I may obey Your law, 35Direct me in the path of Your commandments, 36Turn my heart to Your testimonies 37Turn my eyes away from worthless things; 38Establish Your word to Your servant, 39Turn away the disgrace I dread, 40How I long for Your precepts!

The speaker asks for steadfast love and salvation so he can answer his taunter and keep speaking the word of truth. That answered prayer opens into obedience, freedom, fearless testimony before kings, delight in the commandments, and a posture of lifted hands and meditation.

41May Your loving devotion come to me, O LORD, 42Then I can answer him who taunts, 43Never take Your word of truth from my mouth, 44I will always obey Your law, 45And I will walk in freedom, 46I will speak of Your testimonies before kings, 47I delight in Your commandments 48I lift up my hands to Your commandments, which I love,

The speaker asks the LORD to remember the word that gave him hope, because that promise has become comfort in affliction and life in weakness. Though the arrogant mock and lawless men provoke anger, the ancient judgments, the night remembrance of God's name, and the statutes as songs sustain him.

49Remember Your word to Your servant, 50This is my comfort in affliction, 51The arrogant utterly deride me, 52I remember Your judgments of old, O LORD, 53Rage has taken hold of me 54Your statutes are songs to me 55In the night, O LORD, I remember Your name, 56This is my practice,

Because the LORD himself is his portion, the speaker seeks his favor, examines his ways, and hastens to obey. Even when the wicked bind him, he rises in the night to give thanks, keeps company with those who fear the LORD, and asks to be taught in a world already full of divine steadfast love.

57The LORD is my portion; 58I have sought Your face with all my heart; 59I considered my ways 60I hurried without hesitating 61Though the ropes of the wicked bind me, 62At midnight I rise to give You thanks 63I am a friend to all who fear You, 64The earth is filled with Your loving devotion, O LORD;

The LORD has dealt well with his servant, so he asks for good judgment and knowledge. Affliction, once bitter, is re-read as a mercy because it turned him back from wandering, while the slanders and dullness of the arrogant only make the goodness of God's instruction stand out more clearly and more richly than gold and silver.

65You are good to Your servant, O LORD, 66Teach me good judgment and knowledge, 67Before I was afflicted, I went astray; 68You are good, and You do what is good; 69Though the arrogant have smeared me with lies, 70Their hearts are callous and insensitive, 71It was good for me to be afflicted, 72The law from Your mouth is more precious to me

The one formed by God's hands asks for understanding, comfort, compassion, and life. He knows the LORD's judgments are righteous even in affliction, asks that the arrogant be shamed for their false attack, and hopes that those who fear the LORD will gather around him while his own heart remains blameless.

73Your hands have made me and fashioned me; 74May those who fear You see me and rejoice, 75I know, O LORD, that Your judgments are righteous, 76May Your loving devotion comfort me, I pray, 77May Your compassion come to me, that I may live, 78May the arrogant be put to shame for subverting me with a lie; 79May those who fear You turn to me, 80May my heart be blameless in Your statutes,

The speaker grows faint waiting for salvation, feels dried out and delayed, and asks how long justice will tarry while the arrogant dig pits and persecute him. Yet he still clings to the faithful commandments and asks to be revived by steadfast love so that he can keep the LORD's testimonies.

81My soul faints for Your salvation; 82My eyes fail, looking for Your promise; 83Though I am like a wineskin dried up by smoke, 84How many days must Your servant wait? 85The arrogant have dug pits for me 86All Your commandments are faithful; 87They almost wiped me from the earth, 88Revive me according to Your loving devotion,

Against the speaker's fragility stands the permanence of the LORD's word and faithfulness, fixed as firmly as creation itself. Because that law preserved him from perishing, he claims the LORD's saving ownership, sees through the limits of earthly perfection, and confesses the breadth of the commandment.

89Your word, O LORD, is everlasting; 90Your faithfulness continues through all generations; 91Your ordinances stand to this day, 92If Your law had not been my delight, 93I will never forget Your precepts, 94I am Yours; save me, 95The wicked wait to destroy me, 96I have seen a limit to all perfection,

The speaker loves the law enough to meditate on it all day, and that long attention makes him wiser than enemies, teachers, and elders. He keeps from evil, stays with the LORD's ordinances, tastes the sweetness of the word, and lets that sweetness sharpen his hatred of every false way.

97Oh, how I love Your law! 98Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies, 99I have more insight than all my teachers, 100I discern more than the elders, 101I have kept my feet from every evil path, 102I have not departed from Your ordinances, 103How sweet are Your words to my taste— 104I gain understanding from Your precepts;

The word is a lamp for the speaker's path, so he swears to obey it even in severe affliction and danger. He offers praise, refuses to forget the law though his life is always at risk, receives the testimonies as a lasting inheritance, and sets his heart to keep the statutes to the end.

105Your word is a lamp to my feet 106I have sworn and confirmed 107I am severely afflicted, O LORD; 108Accept the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, 109I constantly take my life in my hands, 110The wicked have set a snare for me, 111Your testimonies are my heritage forever, 112I have inclined my heart to perform Your statutes,

The speaker rejects double-mindedness and clings to the LORD as hiding place and shield. He tells evildoers to depart, asks to be upheld rather than ashamed, and considers the fate of those who stray from the statutes, so that both fear and hope leave his flesh trembling before God's judgments.

113The double-minded I despise, 114You are my hiding place and my shield; 115Depart from me, you evildoers, 116Sustain me as You promised, that I may live; 117Uphold me, and I will be saved, 118You reject all who stray from Your statutes, 119All the wicked on earth You discard like dross; 120My flesh trembles in awe of You;

Having done what is just, the speaker asks not to be abandoned to oppressors. His eyes fail waiting for salvation, yet he still asks for loving devotion, understanding, and the LORD's intervention against those who break the law, and that very crisis makes the commandments more precious than gold and every false path more hateful.

121I have done what is just and right; 122Ensure Your servant’s well-being; 123My eyes fail, looking for Your salvation, 124Deal with Your servant according to Your loving devotion, 125I am Your servant; give me understanding, 126It is time for the LORD to act, 127Therefore I love Your commandments more than gold, 128Therefore I admire all Your precepts

The LORD's testimonies are wonderful and his words give light, so the speaker pants with longing for them and asks for mercy in keeping with God's way with those who love his name. He pleads for ordered steps, redemption from oppression, shining favor, and grieves with tears over those who do not keep the law.

129Wonderful are Your testimonies; 130The unfolding of Your words gives light; 131I open my mouth and pant, 132Turn to me and show me mercy, 133Order my steps in Your word; 134Redeem me from the oppression of man, 135Make Your face shine upon Your servant, 136My eyes shed streams of tears

The speaker confesses that the LORD is righteous and that his testimonies are perfectly right and trustworthy. That purity intensifies his zeal when others forget the word, but even from lowliness and distress he holds fast to the everlasting righteousness of God's instruction and asks for understanding that he may live.

137Righteous are You, O LORD, 138The testimonies You have laid down are righteous 139My zeal has consumed me 140Your promise is completely pure; 141I am lowly and despised, 142Your righteousness is everlasting 143Trouble and distress have found me, 144Your testimonies are righteous forever.

With whole heart and sleepless urgency, the speaker cries out before dawn and through the night for answer, salvation, and life according to steadfast love. The wicked draw near, but the LORD is nearer, and the testimonies he established long ago keep hope from collapsing under pressure.

145I call with all my heart; answer me, O LORD! 146I call to You; save me, 147I rise before dawn and cry for help; 148My eyes anticipate the watches of night, 149Hear my voice, O LORD, according to Your loving devotion; 150Those who follow after wickedness draw near; 151You are near, O LORD, 152Long ago I learned from Your testimonies

The speaker asks the LORD to see his affliction, plead his cause, redeem him, and revive him. Salvation remains far from the wicked because they neglect the statutes, but even amid many persecutors he keeps to the testimonies, recoils from faithlessness, and rests in the truth and enduring righteousness of the whole word.

153Look upon my affliction and rescue me, 154Defend my cause and redeem me; 155Salvation is far from the wicked 156Great are Your mercies, O LORD; 157Though my persecutors and foes are many, 158I look on the faithless with loathing 159Consider how I love Your precepts, O LORD; 160The entirety of Your word is truth,

Though rulers persecute without cause, the speaker fears the word more than he fears power and rejoices in God's promise like someone finding great spoil. He hates falsehood, praises the LORD repeatedly, knows the peace of those who love the law, waits for salvation, and obeys out of love.

161Rulers persecute me without cause, 162I rejoice in Your promise 163I hate and abhor falsehood, 164Seven times a day I praise You 165Abundant peace belongs to those who love Your law; 166I wait for Your salvation, O LORD, 167I obey Your testimonies 168I obey Your precepts and Your testimonies,

The psalm closes with a final sequence of pleas and praise: the speaker asks for understanding, deliverance, help, salvation, and life so that his lips and tongue can answer with worship. Yet the last line remains humble and exposed, confessing that he has strayed like a lost sheep and asking the LORD to seek him without erasing his love for the commandments.

169May my cry come before You, O LORD; 170May my plea come before You; 171My lips pour forth praise, 172My tongue sings of Your word, 173May Your hand be ready to help me, 174I long for Your salvation, O LORD, 175Let me live to praise You; 176I have strayed like a lost sheep;

Section summaryThe psalm blesses the life shaped by God's instruction, then unfolds that blessing through prayer, longing, resolve, affliction, resistance, delight, and repeated pleas for understanding and life. Again and again the speaker returns to the same center: the LORD's word is trustworthy, pure, life-giving, and worth loving even when enemies press in, shame threatens, and the soul grows faint.
Role in the chapterThis section gathers the whole chapter into one sustained act of devotion. Its work is not to advance a plot but to keep circling the same holy center until obedience, delight, suffering, memory, and hope all come to rest under the LORD's word.
