Psalms 110:1-7·~1 min

God’s Faithful Messiah

The chapter opens with the LORD speaking to David's lord and seating him at his right hand until his enemies become a footstool. From Zion his scepter extends into the midst of opposition, and his people gather willingly in holy splendor, so that his rule appears both divinely granted and gladly answered.

A1 Psalm of David. 2The LORD extends Your mighty scepter from Zion: 3Your people shall be willing

At the center of the psalm stands the LORD's sworn declaration that this ruler is a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. The office is not temporary, inherited in the ordinary way, or open to revision, because it rests on God's own oath.

4The LORD has sworn

The psalm ends with the Lord at the ruler's right hand, striking down kings in the day of wrath and judging the nations with overwhelming finality. Yet the final image is not exhaustion but onward strength: he drinks from the brook by the road and therefore lifts up his head, finishing the psalm with unbroken momentum and triumph.

5The Lord is at Your right hand; 6He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead; 7He will drink from the brook by the road;

It goes on to announce an irrevocable priesthood after the order of Melchizedek and ends by portraying decisive judgment over nations and kings before the victorious ruler rises refreshed to lift up his head.
Role in the chapterThis section functions as a concentrated royal oracle. It reveals that God's chosen ruler reigns by divine appointment, serves in a priestly capacity not limited to ordinary succession, and brings God's judgment and victory to completion.
