The Law of Tassels
The LORD commands Israel to make tassels with blue cords on their garments through all generations. These are to be seen and remembered, so that the people obey his commandments instead of following their own hearts and eyes.
A37nd the LORD said to Moses, 38“Speak to the Israelites and tell them that throughout the generations to come they are to make for themselves tassels for the corners of their garments, with a blue cord on each tassel. 39These will serve as tassels for you to look at, so that you may remember all the commandments of the LORD, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves by following your own heart and your own eyes.
Verse 37The LORD speaks to Moses again with another command for Israel.
It opens the final movement of the chapter.
Verse 38Israel is to make tassels with a blue cord on the corners of their garments throughout the generations.
It gives the visible practice they are to keep.
Verse 39The tassels are to be looked at so Israel remembers the LORD’s commandments and obeys them instead of following their own heart and eyes.
It explains how the sign is meant to shape memory and conduct.
By remembering and obeying the commandments, Israel is to be holy to their God. The command closes by recalling the LORD who brought them out of Egypt to be their God.
40Then you will remember and obey all My commandments, and you will be holy to your God. 41I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD your God.”
Verse 40In this way the people will remember and obey all the LORD’s commandments and be holy to their God.
It states the intended result of the reminder.
Verse 41The LORD identifies himself as the God who brought Israel out of Egypt to be their God: "I am the LORD your God."
