A Sabbath-Breaker Stoned

A man is found gathering wood on the Sabbath and is brought before Israel’s leaders and the congregation. Because the required judgment has not yet been declared, he is kept in custody.

W32hile the Israelites were in the wilderness, a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day. 33Those who found the man gathering wood brought him to Moses, Aaron, and the whole congregation, 34and because it had not been declared what should be done to him, they placed him in custody.

The LORD commands that the man be put to death outside the camp, and the congregation stones him as instructed. The judgment is carried out exactly as commanded.

35And the LORD said to Moses, “The man must surely be put to death. The whole congregation is to stone him outside the camp.” 36So the whole congregation took the man outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Section summaryA man found gathering wood on the Sabbath is brought before Moses, Aaron, and the congregation, and held until the LORD’s judgment is given. The LORD commands that he be stoned outside the camp, and the congregation carries out that sentence.
Role in the chapterThis brief narrative gives concrete shape to the distinction just made between error and defiance. It shows the community receiving and executing the LORD’s judgment in a case of open violation.
