The Lamp of the Body

The eye determines the body’s condition, since good sight fills the whole body with light while bad sight leaves it dark. Darkness inside the light only intensifies the darkness.

T22he eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. 23But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

Mastery cannot be divided, because devotion to one master excludes the other. God and money stand as rival claims.

24No one can serve two masters: Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Section summaryJesus uses the eye as the lamp of the body. Good eyes fill the body with light; bad eyes fill it with darkness. The section closes by ruling out divided service: no one can serve both God and money.
