The Lesson of the Fig Tree

The fig tree’s tender branches and leaves signal that summer is near, and in the same way the disciples will know he is near when they see all these things.

N32ow learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its branches become tender and sprout leaves, you know that summer is near. 33So also, when you see all these things, you will know that He is near, right at the door.

Jesus says this generation will not pass away before all these things happen, and that heaven and earth will pass away while his words remain.

34Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened. 35Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.

Section summaryJesus uses the fig tree to show how visible signs disclose nearness. When all these things appear, his coming is near, and he says that this generation will not pass away before they happen, while heaven and earth themselves will pass away before his words do.
