The Temple Tax

In Capernaum, collectors ask whether Jesus pays the two-drachma tax. Peter answers yes, and Jesus says the sons are exempt, yet instructs him to catch a fish and find a coin there to pay for both of them, so that no offense is given.

A24fter they had arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, “Does your Teacher pay the two drachmas?” 25“Yes,” he answered. 26“From others,” Peter answered. 27“Then the sons are exempt,” Jesus said to him. “But so that we may not offend them, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take the first fish you catch. When you open its mouth, you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for My tax and yours.”
