Jesus before the Sanhedrin

The council asks if Jesus is the Christ and the Son of God; he points to their unbelief, names his place at God's right hand, and is finally taken at his own word.

A66t daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and scribes, met together. They led Jesus into their Sanhedrin and said, 67“If You are the Christ, tell us.” 68Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe. And if I ask you a question, you will not answer. 69But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” 70So they all asked, “Are You then the Son of God?” 71“Why do we need any more testimony?” they declared. “We have heard it for ourselves from His own lips.”

Section summaryAt daybreak the council gathers, brings Jesus before the Sanhedrin, and asks whether he is the Christ and the Son of God. Jesus answers with the Son of Man seated at God's right hand, and the council treats his own words as enough.
Role in the chapterThis section brings the night's case into daylight, where Jesus speaks plainly about the Son of Man and the council turns his answer into testimony against him.
