Woe to the Unrepentant

Jesus names Chorazin and Bethsaida and compares their response to that of Tyre and Sidon, which would have turned in repentance. He says the judgment on those cities will be lighter than on these towns.

W13oe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.

Jesus speaks against Capernaum’s proud rise and declares its fall. He then ties the reception of the messengers to the reception of himself and of the One who sent him.

15And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades! 16Whoever listens to you listens to Me; whoever rejects you rejects Me; and whoever rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”

Section summaryJesus pronounces woe on Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum because they did not respond with repentance to the works done among them. He links the reception of the messengers to the reception of himself and the Father who sent him.
