The Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

The officers return without Jesus and say that no one has ever spoken like him. The Pharisees accuse them of being deceived and deny that any ruler or Pharisee believes. They dismiss the crowd as cursed for not knowing the law. Nicodemus asks whether their law judges a man before hearing him. They answer with ridicule, insisting that no prophet comes from Galilee, and the chapter ends with each returning home.

T45hen the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?” 46“Never has anyone spoken like this man!” the officers answered. 47“Have you also been deceived?” replied the Pharisees. 48“Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him? 49But this crowd that does not know the law— they are under a curse.” 50Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of them, asked, 51“Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?” 52“Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.” 53Then each went to his own home.

Section summaryThe officers return empty-handed and speak of Jesus' unmatched speech. The Pharisees dismiss them, deny that any ruler believes, and denounce the crowd as ignorant of the law. Nicodemus asks for a hearing before judgment, but they mock his Galilean ties, and the section ends with each person going home.
Role in the chapterThis closing section shows the leaders hardening their unbelief while one voice still asks for hearing before judgment.
