Peter’s Confession of Faith

Jesus asks whether the Twelve also want to leave him. Peter answers with a question of dependence, then speaks for their faith and knowledge, saying Jesus alone has the words of eternal life and is God's holy one.

S67o Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you want to leave too?” 68Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God. ”

Jesus says he chose the Twelve, yet one among them is aligned with evil. John identifies Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, as the one who will later betray Jesus.

70Jesus answered them, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71He was speaking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. For although Judas was one of the Twelve, he was later to betray Jesus.

Section summaryJesus asks the Twelve whether they also want to leave, and Peter answers for them with confession rather than departure. He names Jesus as the one with words of eternal life, while Jesus also marks the chosen Twelve and names Judas as the one who will betray him.
