The Promise of the Holy Spirit

Jesus says he is going to the One who sent him, while the disciples remain filled with sorrow; he then says his going is for their benefit because the Advocate will come only if he leaves.

N5ow, however, I am going to Him who sent Me; yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6Instead, your hearts are filled with sorrow because I have told you these things. 7But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

When the Advocate comes, he will expose the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment, showing unbelief, Jesus’ return to the Father, and the condemnation of the ruler of this world.

8And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me; 11and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.

Jesus says there is more to tell them than they can yet bear, but the Spirit of truth will guide them, speak what he hears, glorify Jesus, and disclose what belongs to the Father and the Son before Jesus is seen again after a little while.

12I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet bear to hear it. 13However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come. 14He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you. 15Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take from what is Mine and disclose it to you. 16In a little while you will see Me no more, and then after a little while you will see Me. ”

Section summaryJesus turns from departure to benefit: his going to the Father will make room for the Advocate, who will come to the disciples and act in the world. The Spirit of truth will guide them, speak what he hears, glorify Jesus, and disclose what belongs to the Father and the Son.
Role in the chapterThis section shifts from sorrow about Jesus’ leaving to the Spirit’s arrival, showing that his departure serves the disciples rather than abandoning them.
