The Hatred of the World

If the world hates them, they are to know that it hated Jesus first.

I18f the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first.

The world loves its own, but it hates those Jesus has chosen out of it.

19If you were of the world, it would love you as its own. Instead, the world hates you, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.

Jesus recalls that a servant is not greater than his master, and persecution of him means persecution of them as well.

20Remember the word that I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you as well; if they kept My word, they will keep yours as well.

They will be treated this way because of Jesus’ name and their ignorance of the one who sent him.

21But they will treat you like this because of My name, since they do not know the One who sent Me.

Jesus’ coming and speaking leaves them without excuse for their sin.

22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin.

Whoever hates Jesus also hates his Father.

23Whoever hates Me hates My Father as well.

Jesus’ works, like his words, leave them without excuse, yet they have seen and hated both him and his Father.

24If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have seen and hated both Me and My Father.

Their hatred without reason fulfills what is written in their law.

25But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated Me without reason.’

When the Advocate comes, the Spirit of truth sent from the Father by Jesus, he will testify about Jesus.

26When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father — the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father — He will testify about Me.

The disciples must also testify, since they have been with Jesus from the beginning.

27And you also must testify, because you have been with Me from the beginning.[’’]

Section summaryJesus prepares the disciples for hatred from the world that first hated him. Their separation from the world explains the hostility, and his words and works leave the world without excuse. The section ends with the Advocate’s testimony and the disciples’ own witness, joined to the Father’s sending of the Son.
Role in the chapterThis closing movement turns from inner fellowship to outward conflict and testimony. It places persecution, guilt, and witness beside one another so the disciples know both the cause of the world’s hatred and the source of their testimony.
