The Consequence of Israel’s Sin
Israel is asked why she has become prey, with lions roaring over her and foreign cities breaking her crown. The answer is that she has done this to herself by forsaking the LORD while He was leading her in the way.

Egypt and Assyria are held up as empty directions to run, because Judah's own evil is already enough to correct her. The bitterness of forsaking the LORD and living without His fear is named as the real lesson of her condition.
18Now what will you gain on your way to Egypt 19Your own evil will discipline you;
The LORD recalls how long ago Judah cast off His yoke and behaved like an unfaithful woman on every high hill. Though God planted her as a pure vine and she now tries to wash herself clean, her guilt remains fixed before Him.
