The Sovereignty of God
Israel is told not to imitate the nations or fear the signs of the heavens, because the customs of the peoples are empty. Their gods are cut from wood, overlaid with metal, fastened in place, and unable either to speak or to move, so they are not to be feared at all.
H1ear the word that the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel. 2This is what the LORD says: 3For the customs of the peoples are worthless; 4They adorn it with silver and gold 5Like scarecrows in a cucumber patch,
Jeremiah answers the foolishness of idols by declaring that none is like the LORD, the great King of nations whose name is mighty in power. Though human wisdom and artistry produce elaborate images, only the LORD is the true God, the living God, and the everlasting King before whom the earth trembles.
6There is none like You, O LORD. 7Who would not fear You, O King of nations? 8But they are altogether senseless and foolish, 9Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish, 10But the LORD is the true God;
The false gods that made neither heaven nor earth are declared destined to perish, while the LORD is praised as Creator and sovereign over rain, wind, and the storehouses of the sky. Idol-makers are left ashamed by lifeless images, but Jacob's Portion is altogether different, for He formed all things and Israel belongs to Him.
11Thus you are to tell them: “These gods, who have made neither the heavens nor the earth, will perish from this earth and from under these heavens.” 12The LORD made the earth by His power; 13When He thunders, 14Every man is senseless and devoid of knowledge; 15They are worthless, a work to be mocked. 16The Portion of Jacob is not like these,
