The Root of Jesse

A shoot springs from the apparently dead stump of Jesse, signaling that David's line is not extinguished after all. The Spirit of the LORD rests on this ruler in fullness, giving Him wisdom, counsel, might, knowledge, and delight in the fear of the LORD, so that His judgments are not based on appearances but on righteousness, truth, and decisive justice for the poor and the wicked alike.

T1hen a shoot will spring up from the stump of Jesse, 2The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him— 3And He will delight in the fear of the LORD. 4but with righteousness He will judge the poor, 5Righteousness will be the belt around His hips,

Under this king the created order itself is transformed: wolf and lamb, calf and lion, bear and cattle, child and serpent all inhabit a world no longer governed by violence. The reason this peace spreads so widely is that the earth becomes filled with the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea, making divine knowledge the atmosphere of universal safety.

6The wolf will live with the lamb, 7The cow will graze with the bear, 8The infant will play by the cobra’s den, 9They will neither harm nor destroy

The Root of Jesse stands not only for Israel but as a banner for the peoples, drawing the nations to Himself and making His resting place glorious. At the same time the Lord stretches out His hand again to recover His remnant from the far reaches of exile, raising a signal that gathers both dispersed Israel and scattered Judah back into visible unity.

10On that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples. The nations will seek Him, and His place of rest will be glorious. 11On that day the Lord will extend His hand a second time to recover the remnant of His people from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. 12He will raise a banner for the nations

The old envy between Ephraim and Judah is removed, allowing the restored people to act together rather than against one another. The LORD then dries up sea and river obstacles, subdues hostile territories, and creates a highway for the remnant as He once did in the exodus, showing that the final restoration is both reconciliatory and redemptively triumphant.

13Then the jealousy of Ephraim will depart, 14They will swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines to the west; 15The LORD will devote to destruction 16There will be a highway for the remnant of His people

Section summaryThe chapter's single movement begins with a shoot rising from Jesse's stump and continues through the Spirit-endowed character of the coming ruler, the equity of His judgments, and the peace His reign brings even into the animal world. It then widens outward to the nations seeking the Root of Jesse, the regathering of Israel's remnant from exile, the healing of internal division, and the opening of a highway home under the LORD's sovereign hand.
Role in the chapterThis section presents the full messianic vision of righteous rule, reconciled creation, and gathered people under the banner of Jesse's Root.
