Chapter 11

The Root of Jesse

Isaiah 11 answers the felling imagery at the end of chapter 10 with a new beginning: from Jesse's stump a Spirit-filled ruler emerges whose wisdom, righteousness, and fear of the LORD establish true justice. Under His reign creation itself is reordered into peace, the nations gather to Him, scattered Israel is regathered, old rivalries are healed, and God opens a redeemed path for the remnant to come home.

This chapter is one of Isaiah's clearest portraits of messianic renewal, joining royal justice, cosmic peace, Gentile hope, and restored Israel in one unified vision. It shows that God's answer to corrupted kings, violent nations, and fractured people is not merely survival but a new Davidic ruler whose Spirit-shaped reign remakes both human society and the world it inhabits.

T1hen a shoot will spring up from the stump of Jesse, 2The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him— 3And He will delight in the fear of the LORD. 4but with righteousness He will judge the poor, 5Righteousness will be the belt around His hips,

6The wolf will live with the lamb, 7The cow will graze with the bear, 8The infant will play by the cobra’s den, 9They will neither harm nor destroy

10On that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples. The nations will seek Him, and His place of rest will be glorious. 11On that day the Lord will extend His hand a second time to recover the remnant of His people from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. 12He will raise a banner for the nations

13Then the jealousy of Ephraim will depart, 14They will swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines to the west; 15The LORD will devote to destruction 16There will be a highway for the remnant of His people
