The Children of Bilhah

Dan's son and Naphtali's sons are listed, and Bilhah's branch is counted as seven in all. The family record remains careful and compact to the end.

T23he son of Dan: Hushim. 24The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. 25These are the sons of Jacob born to Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel — seven in all.

The count then widens to the whole family: sixty-six direct descendants come with Jacob, and seventy members are counted when Joseph's two sons in Egypt are included.

26All those belonging to Jacob who came to Egypt— his direct descendants, besides the wives of Jacob’s sons— numbered sixty-six persons. 27And with the two sons who had been born to Joseph in Egypt, the members of Jacob’s family who went to Egypt were seventy in all.

Section summaryThe final branch names the descendants of Bilhah through Dan and Naphtali, then gathers them into a count of seven. The chapter then widens from branch totals to the whole household, counting sixty-six direct descendants and seventy including Joseph's sons in Egypt.
Role in the chapterThis section completes the genealogy and brings the separate family branches back into one household total. It prepares the chapter to move from names on a list to living persons arriving together in Egypt.
