Chapter 46

Jacob’s Journey to Egypt and more

Genesis 46 follows Jacob as he leaves Canaan under God's assurance, carrying his whole household toward Egypt. The chapter pauses to name the family that goes down, then ends with Joseph meeting his father in Goshen and arranging the family's first steps in a foreign land.

This chapter turns the long Joseph story into the household's full migration. It moves the family from reunion toward settlement, carrying God's earlier promise into a new land where Israel will begin to grow.

Jacob’s Journey to Egypt

Open section

S1o Israel set out with all that he had, and when he came to Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. 2And that night God spoke to Israel in a vision: “Jacob, Jacob!” He said. 3“I am God,” He said, “the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. 4I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will surely bring you back. And Joseph’s own hands will close your eyes.”

5Then Jacob departed from Beersheba, and the sons of Israel took their father Jacob in the wagons Pharaoh had sent to carry him, along with their children and wives. 6They also took the livestock and possessions they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt.

Jacob Arrives in Egypt

Open section

N28ow Jacob had sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen. When Jacob’s family arrived in the land of Goshen, 29Joseph prepared his chariot and went there to meet his father Israel. Joseph presented himself to him, embraced him, and wept profusely. 30Then Israel said to Joseph, “Finally I can die, now that I have seen your face and know that you are still alive!”

31Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and inform Pharaoh: ‘My brothers and my father’s household from the land of Canaan have come to me. 32The men are shepherds; they raise livestock, and they have brought their flocks and herds and all that they own.’ 33When Pharaoh summons you and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’ 34you are to say, ‘Your servants have raised livestock ever since our youth — both we and our fathers.’ Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of Goshen, since all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.”

  1. 01vv. 1-6Jacob’s Journey to EgyptJacob sets out for Egypt, but first stops at Beersheba to sacrifice to the God of Isaac. In a night vision God steadies his fear, promises to go with him, and the family leaves Canaan together with all they own.
  2. 02vv. 7Those Who Went to EgyptThe chapter briefly gathers the whole family into one line before the names begin. Jacob goes to Egypt with sons, grandsons, daughters, and granddaughters, with none of his offspring left outside the count.
  3. 03vv. 8-15The Children of LeahThe first family register names Leah's branch of Jacob's household, moving through her sons and their children. The list remembers Judah's dead sons in Canaan and ends by counting Leah's descendants, including Dinah, at thirty-three.
  4. 04vv. 16-18The Children of ZilpahThe register next names the descendants of Zilpah through Gad and Asher, including Serah among Asher's children. It then closes this branch with a total of sixteen persons born to Jacob through Leah's maidservant.
  5. 05vv. 19-22The Children of RachelRachel's branch is named with special brevity and weight: Joseph and Benjamin stand at its center. Joseph's sons are already born in Egypt, Benjamin's sons are listed in full, and the whole branch is counted as fourteen.
  6. 06vv. 23-27The Children of BilhahThe final branch names the descendants of Bilhah through Dan and Naphtali, then gathers them into a count of seven. The chapter then widens from branch totals to the whole household, counting sixty-six direct descendants and seventy including Joseph's sons in Egypt.
  7. 07vv. 28-34Jacob Arrives in EgyptWhen the family reaches Goshen, Judah goes ahead and Joseph comes out in his chariot to meet his father, embracing him in tears. Jacob speaks as one whose waiting is complete, and Joseph prepares the family to speak carefully before Pharaoh so they may settle in Goshen.
