The Prince’s Portion

Land on either side of the holy district and city property is assigned to the prince, stretching from west to east in parallel with the tribal portions. By setting a fixed princely inheritance, the vision removes the excuse for future oppression and dispossession. The section ends with a direct rebuke to Israel's princes, commanding them to stop violence and do what is just and right.

N7ow the prince will have the area bordering each side of the area formed by the holy district and the property of the city, extending westward from the western side and eastward from the eastern side, running lengthwise from the western boundary to the eastern boundary and parallel to one of the tribal portions. 8This land will be his possession in Israel. 9And My princes will no longer oppress My people, but will give the rest of the land to the house of Israel according to their tribes. For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Enough, O princes of Israel! Cease your violence and oppression, and do what is just and right. Stop dispossessing My people, declares the Lord GOD.’

Section summaryThe prince receives the territory on both sides of the holy district and city property, extending east and west across the land. This arrangement secures his rightful possession and is meant to prevent the abuses by which former rulers dispossessed the people. The LORD directly commands Israel's princes to stop violence and oppression and to act with justice.
Role in the chapterThis section defines a just princely allotment so that leadership no longer becomes an instrument of exploitation.
