Israel’s Rebellion in the Land

God says Israel blasphemed Him further once in the land by sacrificing on high hills and under leafy trees, at places whose very name memorialized their provocation. Then He addresses the present generation directly: they still defile themselves in the same way, offering their children through the fire and pursuing idols. Therefore He will not be consulted by them, and their dream of becoming like the surrounding nations in wood-and-stone worship will not stand.

T27herefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel, and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: In this way also your fathers blasphemed Me by their unfaithfulness against Me. 28When I brought them into the land that I swore to give them and they saw any high hill or leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices, presented offerings that provoked Me, sent up their fragrant incense, and poured out their drink offerings. 29So I asked them: ‘What is this high place to which you go?’ 30Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD says: Will you defile yourselves the way your fathers did, prostituting yourselves with their abominations? 31When you offer your gifts, sacrificing your sons in the fire, you continue to defile yourselves with all your idols to this day. So should I be consulted by you, O house of Israel? As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will not be consulted by you! 32When you say, ‘Let us be like the nations, like the peoples of the lands, serving wood and stone,’ what you have in mind will never come to pass.

Section summaryEven after the LORD brought Israel into the promised land He had sworn to give them, they provoked Him there by using every high hill and leafy tree as a place for sacrifices, offerings, and soothing aromas. The chapter then turns from the past to the present: Israel is still defiling itself through idolatrous worship and child sacrifice, so the LORD refuses to be consulted by a generation that wants to become like the pagan nations around them.
Role in the chapterThis section connects the rebellion of the land period directly to the elders' present condition and exposes continuity rather than change.
