The Parable Explained

The LORD explains the riddle to rebellious Israel: Babylon took Jerusalem's king and princes, then installed another ruler from the royal line and bound him by covenant and oath so the kingdom might remain low but stable. Instead of honoring that arrangement, the king rebelled and sent to Egypt for horses and a large army. The LORD declares that such despising of covenant and oath will not prosper, because the rebellion is not merely against Babylonian power but against sworn obligation.

T¹¹hen the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ¹²“Now say to this rebellious house: ‘Do you not know what these things mean?’ ¹³Tell them, ‘Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, carried off its king and officials, and brought them back with him to Babylon. He took a member of the royal family and made a covenant with him, putting him under oath. Then he carried away the leading men of the land, ¹⁴so that the kingdom would be brought low, unable to lift itself up, surviving only by keeping his covenant. ¹⁵But this king rebelled against Babylon by sending his envoys to Egypt to ask for horses and a large army. Will he flourish? Will the one who does such things escape? Can he break a covenant and yet escape?’ ¹⁶‘As surely as I live,’ declares the Lord GOD, ‘he will die in Babylon, in the land of the king who enthroned him, whose oath he despised and whose covenant he broke. ¹⁷Pharaoh with his mighty army and vast horde will not help him in battle, when ramps are built and siege walls constructed to destroy many lives. ¹⁸He despised the oath by breaking the covenant. Seeing that he gave his hand in pledge yet did all these things, he will not escape!’

Speaking in His own name, the LORD says the despised oath was really His oath and the broken covenant His covenant. Therefore He will spread His net over the rebel king, bring him to Babylon, judge him there for treachery, and scatter his fleeing troops to every wind. The judgment will teach the survivors that the LORD Himself has spoken and acted.

¹⁹Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘As surely as I live, I will bring down upon his head My oath that he despised and My covenant that he broke. ²⁰I will spread My net over him and catch him in My snare. I will bring him to Babylon and execute judgment upon him there for the treason he committed against Me. ²¹All his choice troops will fall by the sword, and those who survive will be scattered to every wind. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have spoken.’

The Lord GOD promises to take a tender sprig from the lofty cedar and plant it on Israel's high mountain. From that seemingly small beginning He will grow a magnificent cedar that bears fruit and shelters birds of every kind beneath its branches. Then all the trees of the field will know that the LORD reverses human status by humbling the high, exalting the low, drying the green tree, and making the dry tree flourish.
