The Mercy Seat

The mercy seat is made of pure gold, with cherubim formed from one piece at its ends, facing it beneath outstretched wings. The description gives the ark its crowned and overshadowed top.

H6e constructed a mercy seat of pure gold, two and a half cubits long and a cubit and a half wide. 7He made two cherubim of hammered gold at the ends of the mercy seat, 8one cherub on one end and one on the other, all made from one piece of gold. 9And the cherubim had wings that spread upward, overshadowing the mercy seat. The cherubim faced each other, looking toward the mercy seat.

Section summaryBezalel makes the mercy seat from pure gold and forms two cherubim from the same piece, facing inward with wings spread above it. The section dwells on unity, symmetry, and the guarded space at the ark’s top.
Role in the chapterThis section completes the ark assembly by describing its covering. It draws the focus upward, from the chest itself to the holy place above it.
