The Promise of God’s Presence

Moses appeals to the favor God has shown him and asks to know His ways, insisting that Israel cannot go on without God's own Presence. The LORD answers by promising to go with them and to do what Moses has asked.

T12hen Moses said to the LORD, “Look, You have been telling me, ‘Lead this people up,’ but You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have found favor in My sight.’ 13Now if indeed I have found favor in Your sight, please let me know Your ways, that I may know You and find favor in Your sight. Remember that this nation is Your people.” 14And the LORD answered, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 15“If Your Presence does not go with us,” Moses replied, “do not lead us up from here. 16For how then can it be known that Your people and I have found favor in Your sight, unless You go with us? How else will we be distinguished from all the other people on the face of the earth?” 17So the LORD said to Moses, “I will do this very thing you have asked, for you have found favor in My sight, and I know you by name.”

Moses asks to see God's glory, and the LORD answers with both generosity and limit. He will let His goodness pass by and proclaim His name, but Moses may not see His face and live.

18Then Moses said, “Please show me Your glory.” 19“I will cause all My goodness to pass before you,” the LORD replied, “and I will proclaim My name — the LORD — in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 20But He added, “You cannot see My face, for no one can see Me and live.” 21The LORD continued, “There is a place near Me where you are to stand upon a rock, 22and when My glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by. 23Then I will take My hand away, and you will see My back; but My face must not be seen.”

Section summaryMoses presses the LORD to make clear who will go with Israel and asks to know His ways, tying Israel's identity to God's own Presence among them. The LORD grants that Presence and, when Moses asks to see His glory, gives a merciful but limited revelation of His goodness and name.
Role in the chapterThis closing section resolves the chapter's main crisis by securing God's Presence for the people through Moses' intercession. It also widens the scene from guidance to glory, showing that even in favor and intimacy, God remains free, holy, and beyond full sight.
