Moses Comforts the People

The signs at the mountain fill the people with fear, and they draw back. They ask Moses to hear God for them rather than face that voice themselves.

W18hen all the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sounding of the ram’s horn, and the mountain enveloped in smoke, they trembled and stood at a distance. 19“Speak to us yourself and we will listen,” they said to Moses. “But do not let God speak to us, or we will die.”

Moses tells them the encounter is meant to form a fear that restrains sin, not a terror that drives them away entirely. Even so, they remain at a distance while Moses goes into the thick darkness toward God.

20“Do not be afraid,” Moses replied. “For God has come to test you, so that the fear of Him may be before you, to keep you from sinning.” 21And the people stood at a distance as Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.

Section summaryThe people recoil from Sinai's thunder, smoke, and trumpet, asking Moses to stand between them and the voice of God. Moses tells them this fear is meant to keep them from sin, then goes alone into the darkness where God is.
Role in the chapterThis section shows the people's response to divine speech and marks Moses' mediating place between them and God. It turns the commands from spoken words into a lived scene of distance, fear, and approach.
