The Pillars of Cloud and Fire

God does not lead Israel by the shorter coastal road because war might drive them back to Egypt. Instead He takes them by the wilderness toward the Red Sea, and they leave prepared for the road ahead.

W17hen Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them along the road through the land of the Philistines, though it was shorter. For God said, “If the people face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” 18So God led the people around by the way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea. And the Israelites left the land of Egypt arrayed for battle.

Verse 17After Pharaoh lets the people go, God avoids the shorter road through Philistine land because conflict might make Israel turn back to Egypt.

It explains the wisdom behind the chosen route.

Verse 18God leads Israel around by the wilderness toward the Red Sea, and the people leave Egypt arrayed for battle.

It describes the actual path the journey takes.

Moses carries Joseph’s bones in keeping with Joseph’s oath, and the people move from Succoth to Etham at the edge of the wilderness.

19Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the sons of Israel swear a solemn oath when he said, “God will surely attend to you, and then you must carry my bones with you from this place.” 20They set out from Succoth and camped at Etham on the edge of the wilderness.

Verse 19Moses takes Joseph’s bones with him because Joseph had made Israel swear they would carry them out when God came to help them.

It ties the exodus to an earlier promise and hope.

Verse 20The people depart from Succoth and camp at Etham on the edge of the wilderness.

It marks the journey’s next stage in place.

The LORD goes before the people in cloud by day and fire by night, giving guidance and light so they can travel at any hour. His presence does not leave its place before them.

21And the LORD went before them in a pillar of cloud to guide their way by day, and in a pillar of fire to give them light by night, so that they could travel by day or night. 22Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place before the people.

Verse 21The LORD goes before Israel in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night to guide them and give them light.

It introduces the visible form of the LORD’s guidance.

Verse 22The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night remain before the people without departing.

It emphasizes the constancy of the LORD’s presence.

Role in the chapterThis section begins the journey from Egypt by showing that Israel’s route is governed by divine care rather than speed. It also places the LORD’s steady presence at the center of the wilderness road ahead.
