Spiritual Wisdom

Paul says that since hearing of their faith in the Lord Jesus and their love for all the saints, he has not stopped giving thanks for them in prayer. He asks that God would grant them wisdom and revelation, enlightening the eyes of their hearts to know the hope of his calling, the riches of his inheritance, and the surpassing greatness of his power toward believers.

F15or this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in your knowledge of Him. 18I ask that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know the hope of His calling, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, 19and the surpassing greatness of His power to us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of His mighty strength,

That power, Paul says, is the same power God worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him in the heavenly realms far above every rule and authority. God placed all things under Christ's feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of the one who fills all in all.

20which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms, 21far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22And God put everything under His feet and made Him head over everything for the church, 23which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Section summaryBecause of the Ephesians' faith and love, Paul says he gives thanks for them and keeps asking that God would give them wisdom, revelation, and enlightened hearts. His prayer is that they would know the hope of God's call, the riches of his inheritance, and the power now at work for believers, the same power that raised Christ, enthroned him above every rule, and gave him to the church as head over all.
Role in the chapterThis section turns the chapter's praise into prayer. It asks that the realities already named in Christ would become inwardly known and understood by the church.
