Deuteronomy 25:13-16·~1 min
Standard Weights and Measures
Israel must not keep differing weights or measures for advantage but must use accurate ones in trade. Honest scales belong to life in the land, while deceit in these matters is detestable to the Lord.
Y13ou shall not have two differing weights in your bag, one heavy and one light. 14You shall not have two differing measures in your house, one large and one small. 15You must maintain accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may live long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. 16For everyone who behaves dishonestly in regard to these things is detestable to the LORD your God.
Section summaryThis section forbids keeping double standards in trade and requires weights and measures that are whole and true. Honest dealing is tied both to life in the land and to the Lord's judgment against deceit.
Role in the chapterIt turns from family obligations to daily commerce. The section shows that covenant faithfulness includes the quiet accuracy of ordinary exchange, not only public or ceremonial acts.
