A Warning against Apostasy

Paul says the Spirit expressly warns that in later times some will depart from the faith by listening to deceitful spirits and demonic teachings conveyed through lying hypocrisy. These teachers forbid marriage and certain foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by believers who know the truth.

N1ow the Spirit expressly states that in later times some will abandon the faith to follow deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons, 2influenced by the hypocrisy of liars, whose consciences are seared with a hot iron. 3They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from certain foods that God has created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

Paul answers that every creation of God is good and not to be rejected when it is received with thanksgiving, because it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.

4For every creation of God is good, and nothing that is received with thanksgiving should be rejected, 5because it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

Section summaryPaul says the Spirit plainly warns that in later times some will depart from the faith, following deceitful spirits through teachers whose consciences are seared. Their error shows itself in forbidding marriage and restricting foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who know the truth. Paul answers that distortion by insisting that God's creation is good and sanctified by His word and prayer.
Role in the chapterThis opening section exposes false teaching not merely as mistake but as a rejection of God's good gifts. It prepares Timothy to defend the truth by reasserting creation, thanksgiving, and sanctification.
