The Word of Life

John opens without formal greeting and moves straight into witness. What was from the beginning has been heard, seen, contemplated, and touched: the Word of life has truly been revealed in the person of Christ. The apostles therefore proclaim not private insight but public testimony, so that their hearers may enter the same fellowship they themselves enjoy with the Father and the Son. The writing is thus aimed at completed joy through shared participation in the life of God made known in Jesus Christ.

T1hat which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our own eyes, which we have gazed upon and touched with our own hands — this is the Word of life. 2And this is the life that was revealed; we have seen it and testified to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us. 3We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And this fellowship of ours is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. 4We write these things so that our joy may be complete.

Section summaryJohn begins by proclaiming Jesus Christ as the eternal Word of life who has truly entered history and been encountered by apostolic witnesses. The life that was with the Father has been revealed, and the apostles now testify to what they have seen and heard so that others may share in their fellowship. That fellowship is not merely social closeness but communion with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. The section culminates in the purpose of the writing itself: that joy may be brought to fullness.
Role in the chapterThis section grounds the letter in apostolic testimony to the incarnate Son and presents fellowship with God as the goal of proclamation.
