Chapter 1

The Word of Life and Walking in the Light

1 John 1 opens by rooting the Christian message in apostolic encounter with the incarnate Son. John and the other witnesses proclaim the Word of life not as an idea or mystical principle, but as One they heard, saw, gazed upon, and touched. Their proclamation aims at shared fellowship with the Father and the Son and at completed joy within the believing community. From there the chapter turns to the moral implications of this fellowship: God is light, and fellowship with Him cannot coexist with walking in darkness. John therefore exposes false claims of spirituality that deny sin or excuse darkness, while also holding out the true path of life in the light, honest confession, and cleansing through the blood of Jesus. The chapter sets the tone for the whole letter by joining Christ-centered testimony, moral seriousness, and gracious assurance.

As the opening chapter of 1 John, this passage establishes the letter's major themes and categories. It begins with apostolic witness to the incarnate life of Christ, thereby grounding the letter's authority and guarding the church from detached or speculative spirituality. It then introduces the first great test of authentic fellowship: walking in the light rather than in darkness. This chapter is especially important because it refuses both denial and despair. John will not allow claims to fellowship with God that bypass truthfulness about sin, but neither does he leave believers in guilt, because confession meets the faithfulness and justice of God in Christ. In that sense, 1 John 1 functions as the theological doorway into the rest of the letter, defining fellowship, joy, holiness, and cleansing in explicitly Christ-centered terms.

The Word of Life

Open section

T1hat which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our own eyes, which we have gazed upon and touched with our own hands — this is the Word of life. 2And this is the life that was revealed; we have seen it and testified to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us. 3We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And this fellowship of ours is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. 4We write these things so that our joy may be complete.

Walking in the Light

Open section

A5nd this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you: God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 6If we say we have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

8If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we say we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar, and His word is not in us.
