1 John

Chapter 2

Jesus Our Advocate and more

1 John 2 extends the opening chapter's concern for truthful fellowship by showing how grace, obedience, love, discernment, and perseverance belong together in life with Christ. John begins pastorally, explaining that he writes so believers will not sin, yet he immediately comforts them with the reality that Jesus Christ the Righteous One is their advocate before the Father and the atoning sacrifice for sin. From there he presses the first major test of genuine knowledge of God: those who truly know Him keep His commandments and walk as Jesus walked. He then turns to the commandment of love, showing that love for brothers and sisters proves life in the light, while hatred exposes ongoing darkness. The chapter next warns against attachment to the world and its passing desires, then exposes the danger of antichrists who deny the Son and thereby reject the Father. It closes by calling believers to let the apostolic message remain in them, to resist deception through the abiding anointing they have received, and to remain in Christ with confidence until His appearing.

As the second chapter of 1 John, this passage develops the letter's core tests of authentic Christian life and pushes them into concrete application. Chapter 1 established the necessity of walking in the light with honest confession of sin; chapter 2 now shows what that life looks like in practice. It is especially important because it holds together truths that are often split apart: Christ's advocacy and atonement do not weaken obedience but empower it; love is not sentimental but marks those who truly live in the light; separation from worldly desire is inseparable from loyalty to the Father; and discernment about false teachers is part of abiding in Christ, not an optional add-on. The chapter also deepens the letter's concern for assurance by teaching that abiding in the Son, keeping His word, and holding fast the apostolic message produce confidence rather than shame at His coming.

vv. 1-6

Jesus Our Advocate

Open section

M1y little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father — Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

3By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him: if we keep His commandments. 4If anyone says, “I know Him,” but does not keep His commandments, he is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5But if anyone keeps His word, the love of God has been truly perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him: 6Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as Jesus walked.

vv. 7-14

A New Commandment

Open section

B7eloved, I am not writing to you a new commandment, but an old one, which you have had from the beginning. This commandment is the message you have heard. 8Then again, I am also writing to you a new commandment, which is true in Him and also in you. For the darkness is fading and the true light is already shining. 9If anyone claims to be in the light but hates his brother, he is still in the darkness. 10Whoever loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no cause of stumbling in him. 11But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness. He does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

12I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven through His name. 13I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. 14I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning.

vv. 15-17

Do Not Love the World

Open section

D15o not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For all that is in the world — the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life — is not from the Father but from the world. 17The world is passing away, along with its desires; but whoever does the will of God remains forever.

vv. 18-23

Beware of Antichrists

Open section

C18hildren, it is the last hour; and just as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. This is how we know it is the last hour. 19They went out from us, but they did not belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. But their departure made it clear that none of them belonged to us. 20You, however, have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. 21I have not written to you because you lack knowledge of the truth, but because you have it, and because no lie comes from the truth. 22Who is the liar, if it is not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, who denies the Father and the Son. 23Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father, but whoever confesses the Son has the Father as well.

vv. 24-29

Remain in Christ

Open section

A24s for you, let what you have heard from the beginning remain in you. If it does, you will also remain in the Son and in the Father. 25And this is the promise that He Himself made to us: eternal life. 26I have written these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27And as for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But just as His true and genuine anointing teaches you about all things, so remain in Him as you have been taught.

28And now, little children, remain in Christ, so that when He appears, we may be confident and unashamed before Him at His coming. 29If you know that He is righteous, you also know that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of Him.

  1. 01vv. 1-6Jesus Our AdvocateJohn begins with both pastoral tenderness and moral seriousness. He writes to restrain sin, yet he does not leave those who fail without hope, because Jesus Christ the Righteous One stands as advocate before the Father and as the atoning sacrifice for sin. On that basis John introduces a crucial test of real knowledge of God: keeping His commandments. Empty claims to know God are exposed as lies when obedience is absent, but those who keep His word show that God's love has reached its proper effect in them. Abiding in Christ therefore includes walking as Jesus Himself walked.
  2. 02vv. 7-14A New CommandmentJohn next turns to the commandment of love, describing it as both old and new. It is old because it belongs to the original apostolic message, yet new because it is now true in Christ and in His people as the darkness recedes and the true light shines. Love for brothers and sisters is therefore a decisive mark of life in the light. Hatred proves that darkness still governs a person, blinding and disorienting them. John then strengthens his readers with a poetic reassurance, addressing little children, fathers, and young men to remind them of forgiveness, true knowledge of the Eternal One, strength in God's word, and victory over the evil one.
  3. 03vv. 15-17Do Not Love the WorldJohn then warns believers against loving the world or the things in it. Love for the world and love for the Father cannot coexist as shared ultimate loyalties, because the world's pattern is defined by fleshly desire, covetous sight, and boastful pride rather than by the Father's will. The world and its desires are temporary and passing, but the one who does the will of God remains forever. John therefore calls believers to a form of detachment rooted not in contempt for creation but in loyalty to the Father and the permanence of eternal life.
  4. 04vv. 18-23Beware of AntichristsJohn next addresses the threat of antichrists, linking their presence to the last hour. These deceivers arose from within the visible community but proved by their departure that they never truly belonged. In contrast, the believers have an anointing from the Holy One and know the truth. John's purpose is therefore not to introduce truth they lack, but to fortify them against lies. The defining lie of antichrist is the denial that Jesus is the Christ and the consequent denial of both the Son and the Father. Right confession of the Son is thus essential to fellowship with God.
  5. 05vv. 24-29Remain in ChristJohn closes the chapter by calling believers to let the message they heard from the beginning remain in them. If they do, they will remain in both the Son and the Father, and the promise attached to that abiding is eternal life. John's warning about deceivers is balanced by his confidence in the anointing believers have received, which remains in them and teaches them truly. He therefore urges them to remain in Christ so that they may be confident and unashamed at His appearing. The chapter ends by connecting Christ's righteousness to the birthmarks of God's children: those who practice righteousness show that they have been born of Him.
