The Burden against Israel’s Enemies

The burden of the word of the LORD falls upon the northern regions, including Damascus, Hamath, Tyre, and Sidon. Tyre in particular is singled out for trusting in fortress-building and amassed silver and gold. Yet the Lord will strip away that security and bring her down despite all her self-made defenses. The paragraph highlights the futility of prideful confidence before divine judgment.

T1his is the burden of the word of the LORD 2and also against Hamath, 3Tyre has built herself a fortress; 4Behold, the Lord will impoverish her

The Philistine cities are then pictured in fear and disintegration as their hopes collapse. Yet the oracle also includes the surprising possibility of purification and incorporation, as the blood and abominations are removed and a remnant survives for God. The section culminates with the LORD camping around His own house so that oppressors no longer pass through. The paragraph therefore combines judgment on enemy cities with protection for Zion and the possibility of transformed outsiders.

5Ashkelon will see and fear; 6A mixed race will occupy Ashdod, 7I will remove the blood from their mouths 8But I will camp around My house because of an army,

Section summaryThe chapter begins with a burden against the surrounding regions and cities that oppose or overshadow Israel. Hamath, Damascus, Tyre, Sidon, and the Philistine cities are all placed under the LORD's scrutiny and coming judgment. Human wealth, fortification, and pride will not stand, yet the oracle does not end in simple destruction. The LORD also promises to guard His own house and even to purify remnants from among the nations. The movement presents divine rule as both punitive toward arrogant powers and protective toward His covenant people.
Role in the chapterThis section establishes the setting of enemy judgment while affirming that the LORD Himself guards Zion and can even reclaim remnants from hostile peoples.
