The Vision of the Measuring Line

Zechariah lifts his eyes and sees a man with a measuring line, intending to measure Jerusalem's breadth and length. The image suggests planning, restoration, and ordered rebuilding, but it also sets up the corrective that follows: Jerusalem's future cannot be contained by merely human expectations or calculations.

T1hen I lifted up my eyes and saw a man with a measuring line in his hand. 2“Where are you going?” I asked.

Before the measuring can define the city, angelic instruction declares that Jerusalem will be inhabited as an unwalled place because of its coming abundance. The LORD Himself will surround it as a wall of fire and dwell within it as glory. The paragraph redefines security and greatness in terms of divine presence rather than visible fortification.

3Then the angel who was speaking with me went forth, and another angel came forward to meet him 4and said to him, “Run and tell that young man: ‘Jerusalem will be a city without walls because of the multitude of men and livestock within it. 5For I will be a wall of fire around it, declares the LORD, and I will be the glory within it.’”

Section summaryZechariah sees a man carrying a measuring line, apparently preparing to assess Jerusalem's dimensions. Before that ordinary act can define the city, another angel interrupts with a larger word from God: Jerusalem will be inhabited like open country because of the coming multitude of people and livestock. The city's security will not depend on walls, because the LORD Himself will be a wall of fire around her and the glory within her. The vision therefore transforms the idea of restoration from mere reconstruction into overflowing divine presence and protection.
Role in the chapterThis section reveals that Jerusalem's restored future will exceed ordinary boundaries and be secured by the LORD's own presence.
